The NDA high school hockey league showcased its competitive spirit over the weekend as six teams battled for an early season jump in the standings.

And if close games and upset wins are an indication, the 2013-14 campaign will offer exciting hockey for varsity athletes and fans.

The West Ferris Trojans, with a foundation of defending champion veterans supported by skilled additions, are undefeated after five games. But the Trojans didn't dominate on the scoreboard.

Franco Cite rallied to give West Ferris a 5-4 scare at Memorial Gardens, Sunday, with Algonquin, Widdifield and Scollard all showing they are only a few bounces away from doing the same.

The Chippewa Raiders, in their first season back after sitting out for a couple years, also showed they have what it takes.

The Raiders first win of the season came Sunday morning in a 3-0 shock to Scollard. And Chippewa followed that up with another strong performance, coming close to beating the Barons before losing 4-3 in overtime.
