The Algonquin Barons (6-2-1) sit atop a tight pack of six teams in the NDA high school hockey loop one month into the 2013-14 season.

Neck-and-neck for second place are the West Ferris Trojans (5-1) and Franco-Cite Patriotes (4-3-2), while the Widdifield Wildcats (4-4) are in third. The Scollard Bears are 2-7-1 and Chippewa Raiders 1-4.

There are two league games on tap Wednesday at Memorial Gardens, with the Wildcats taking on the Bears at 7:30 p.m. and Trojans playing the Raiders at 9 p.m.

All six teams are in action Friday as they host the 40th annual NDA Hockey Tournament, which has attracted five teams from the Soo, Sudbury and Manitoulin, plus one from Burlington.

Games run all day Friday and Saturday morning at both the West Ferris arena and Gardens, with quarterfinals at the Gardens Saturday afternoon. Semis are Sunday morning with a final at 2 p.m., all at the Gardens. See www.ndahockeytournament.com for the schedule.

It's a busy weekend for high school athletes with the 56th annual Tomahawk basketball tournament also taking place at 10 gymnasiums, with details to be announced later this week. The host school is Chippewa.

Algonquin's hockey team, meanwhile, took the lead in NDA league action after a successful three games this weekend.

The Barons tied the Franco Cite Patriotes 3-3 in Sturgeon Falls, Sunday afternoon, blanked the Chippewa Raiders 6-0, Saturday night, and doubled the Scollard Bears 4-2 at Memorial Gardens, Friday.
