The Widdifield Wildcats senior girls volleyball team clinched gold this weekend in Ottawa at the De La Salle Invitational tournament.
The Cats finished the first day second in their pool with a 3-1 record, losing only to Franco Cite of Ottawa a sport études school (sport concentrated curriculum).
Entering power pool play the Cats defeated Samule Ginest and Trinity College in straight sets to finish first and clinch a bye to the quarter finals of the medal round.
In the quarter finals the Wildcats defeated Ember College. Then the Wildcats moved on to face the host school and last years OFSSA AA bronze medalist De La Salle, where the Cats won in straight sets for a birth to the finals. Here the Wildcats would face a reinforced Samual Ginest team, whom defeated Franco Cite in the quarters finals, and then the renowned OFSSA power house Louis Rheal in the semifinals. The Wildcats, after tying sets 1-1in the finals, found themselves down 8-13 in the third and final set. With skill and determination they ran off eight straight points to claim victory 16-14 for the gold.
